Does Size Matter? You Bet it Does!
Creating a warm Welcome with the proper size light fixture on your front entry. Possibly more important than the style and finish of your new lanterns is choosing the proper size for proportion to the front elevation of your home and the visibility from a distance, such as from the street. Your exterior lights always appear to be the proper size when you are standing by your front door...but how do they appear from a distance? Here are a few guidelines to help make the right decision: The height of a lantern should be based on the height of the door. if a single side lantern is used it should be approximately one third (1/3) the size of the door. If two side lanterns are used they should be approximately one fourth (1/4) the size of the door. If a lantern style with a long tail or top scroll is used, be cautious of the overall bulk of the fixture, as the height should approximate one half (1/2) the height of the door. The lanterns should be mounted so that the filament of the bulb is approximately 66" above the threshold of the door. Depending on the outlet box location, different mounting arm styles (on the top or bottom) can be selected to place the filament correctly. Important hint, do not undersize your lanterns. as a rule of thumb, exterior front entry lanterns will look about half the size from 50 feet away. try to visualize your lights from a distance, as your neighbors and friends will see from the street. Remember, a first impression is long lasting. |
