Wooden Mantels and a Great Looking Fireplace Can't make up your mind as to how you can improve your existing fireplace? Perhaps the thought of adding a mantel hasn't occurred to you yet and if so, then you should really consider it, given the fact that some mantels are simply gorgeous. Admittedly, a fireplace looks fantastic in a home and never fails to add a certain kind of charm but adding a mantel just makes it that much more appealing. Browsing through some home decorating magazines can give you an idea as to just how fantastic a mantel can look and if you've never paid much attention to mantels in the past, you may very well be surprised. Whether you opt for a beautiful stone mantel, or whether you opt for one of the exceedingly popular wooden mantels, both can transform your fireplace beyond your wildest imagination. Surprisingly enough, very few home owners seem to be aware of the fact that fireplace mantels not only look good, but they also add value to your property. For the vast majority of people, a living room fireplace is associated with long dark winters and most people will agree, the sound of a fire burning and the flickering flames creates a special sort of atmosphere in any home. This is exactly what makes wooden mantels so desirable because they compliment a fireplace in a way that nothing else can. Of course, it's only to be expected that we don't need a fire burning throughout the year but that's not to say we only have to decorate our fireplaces in the winter. Ways of decorating a wooden mantel are as endless as the universe itself, so the only person who knows what will look best in your home, is you yourself. Of course, standing a few antiques along the shelves never fails to look good but care should be taken to avoid uniformity. In other words, always try to use pieces which vary in size and if need be, add in a few candles to compliment them even more. Likewise, family photos can also stand out nicely providing of course that that frames blend in with the mantel itself. Of course colors and themes are important if you want to create that perfect look but essentially, it all depends on what your own preferences are. As long as you choose to place items on your wooden mantel that actually match and compliment the mantel, you can be as creative as you wish. While most handicrafts are fine for standing on a mantel, one should of course always exercise a certain amount of caution with regards to flammable materials. Considering a wooden mantel is in itself flammable, one can safely stand wooden items on it such as figurines, picture frames and etc, without having to be overly concerned but for your own safety, choose the items wisely. In fact, some people choose to rather only decorate the area surrounding their mantel rather than the mantel itself and if this sounds more appealing to you, you may very well find that a large statue or carving stood either side of the mantel sets it off perfectly. A wooden mantel adds a touch of exquisite luxury to any fireplace whether you decorate it or not. After all, that's the beauty of wooden mantels in the first place; they are beautiful even on their own and with a minimum amount of care, your wooden mantel will be around for as long as you allow it to be.
