Pacman Video Game Release

By Peter Sicoli

The year was 1980. Video games were alive and the arcades were as popular as ever. Then all of a sudden it happened and video games were changed forever. There was chaos everywhere, lines at the stores, store shelves being torn apart and bedlam in the streets. It was the official release of Pac-Mac. That is correct, all the fuss was over the Nintendo release of Pacman. The gobbling little creature that ate what he could, grabbed the cherries, but had to avoid the enemy to survive. Ghosts were the enemies and would knock a life out of Pacman and make the player begin all over. Getting to the next level was a huge accomplisment, even for some of the seasoned players. Those that did make it to the next leoasted that they got there. Pac-man caught on real quick, and to this day Pac-Man still lives and is played by people all over the world.

Back in the 1980's when this game was realeased, most video games centered around one's ability in shooting aliens, spaceships and other enemies; and was clearly targeted at males with itchy trigger fingers. While the male ego back then was fine with the shooting video games, Pac-Man, on the other hand, brought women into the mix, thanks to an addictive and non-violent design and cute, cartoon characters. I would guess to say the introduction of Pacman was the beginning of female play into video games. Sure some girls were playing some of the shooting games and games like pong, but not at an addictive level. Pacman brought out the game play in women. Men and women loved this game and were actually competeing against each other. As the power pellet gobbling Pac-Man, players maneuver him through mazes while avoiding multicolored ghosts. This game was simple to play and understand and anybody had the ability to play it. What was an easy game in theory and was simple to play was even more difficult to master, the game became an enormous hit and was in every arcade, every household, every bar and pizzeria across the nation. Clearly one of the most popular games of our modern times.
