When it comes to home security, the top priority for most is keeping our families safe. If you don't have a home security system installed, then it's important to realize that your door hardware is the only thing standing between you and a criminal who may try to break into your home with the intention or robbing you, or worse, hurting the people you love. This is why buying door entry hardware should not be undertaken without a bit of research. As is usually the case, you get what you pay for, and buying inexpensive entry door hardware may not be the best idea for keeping your family secure. Of course, we all want to save money, but do we really want to do so at the expense of our family's safety? While there are dozens of choices on the market, finding the one that will suit your specific needs may take a little bit of effort. The effort will be well worth it. The safest kind of entry door lock, hands down, is called a mortise lock. Mortise locks are common in older homes and buildings; modern, cylindrical locks came later. Mortise locks are so-named because they require a pocket or a "mortise" to be carved into the door so that the locks sits flush against the door. Some insist that mortise locks weaken the door, since a section must be carved to house the lock. But, this type of lock has proven to be the most reliable exterior locking device that can be installed in a home. If you want to do all you can to prevent a front-door break in, a mortise lock is the way to go. The construction of doors today are stable enough to withstand the pocket that will be needed in the edge of the door unit. There are dozens upon dozens of additional options if you do decide to go with a mortise lock. On the down side, you must hire a trained professional to install a mortise lock. While newer style cylindrical locks can be installed do-it-yourself fashion by most homeowners, this is not the case for mortise locks. The installation of these locks should be left to a professional. While this means it will cost you more, it's a cost that's worth every penny to ensure that you have a secure entry door lock to provide the best possible protection for your family and your possessions. Entry door locks and hardware can cost anywhere from less than $50 at the budget end, all the way up to more than several hundred dollars. Apart from the locking mechanism of the hardware you buy, you may also be concerned with its aesthetics. If you are trying to match the style or decor of your home, you may need to buy a particular door lock to be consistent with your home. To get the highest quality exterior door hardware, spend as much as your budget will allow. It bears repeating that you can't put a price on safety. If your budget is at the low end, you may need to do some comparison shopping to find the right deal, but if budget is less of a concern, purchasing the highest possible quality door hardware that you can afford is money well spent. Whether you select brass or bronze, an exterior mortise lock will give you not only the security, but year after year of dependability.
